We Began Operations in the Early 1950s

College City Beverage began operations in the early 1950s when Jim Hubbard purchased distribution rights for the Northfield, Minnesota area with his wife, Maxine. They worked out of a one-car garage warehouse at 701 College Street distributing G. Heileman’s Canada Dry products and miscellaneous fountain syrups. As their business grew, operations moved to the Monk Festler’s Potato Barn and then to the Edelbrock Chicken Buildings from 1965-1969 on the south edge of Northfield. In 1970 they moved to a warehouse along South Highway 3. It was in the early 1970s that College City Beverage became an official sub-distributor for Anheuser-Busch via Capital City Beverage.

Twenty Years Later

Jim Sawyer and Tom Blaisdell met while employed at the Northwestern State Bank of Northfield. Jim had been transferred to Northwestern State Bank two years prior to Tom, who became employed at the bank in 1975. Three years after working together, they decided to get into the beer business. In 1978 Jim Hubbard and his wife sold College City Beverage to Jim Sawyer and Tom Blaisdell.

By the time of the sale, operations had doubled in size and employed ten people. The major suppliers continued to be G. Heileman Brewing and Anheuser-Busch. College City Beverage added Jacob Leinenkugel products and additional imports, with Heineken selling the largest volume of imports.

1980s

College City Beverage moved to a new warehouse in 1982 due to growth. This larger warehouse was built at the intersection of Highway 3 and Highway 19. The additional space allowed the company delivery trucks to remain in the building overnight. It was during this time that College City Beverage severed relationships with soft drink suppliers and cut their additional line of bar supplies. With this change, Jim and Tom were able to focus and grow their beverage line and acquire the distribution rights for Anheuser-Busch products from the Red Wing Distributorship operating out of 2 warehouses. In 1988, College City Beverage re-located again to a 42,000 square foot warehouse on the South edge of Northfield combining both warehouses into one. In the late 1980’s the company began distributing Summit Brewery products which were brewed in St. Paul, MN.

1990s

The company sold the distribution rights of Jacob Leinenkugel and G. Heileman brands and several imports to focus on Anheuser-Busch, Heineken & Summit Brewery.

There were 3 additions to the building in the mid to late 1990’s.

In 1997, College City Beverage suffered the loss of Tom Blaisdell. Tom’s death took a major toll on the company and its employees. At the time of his death, Tom’s three children had been employed at College City Beverage. They decided to pursue other interests in 1998. Tom’s death also required a change of ownership, leading Jim Sawyer to purchase Tom’s share of the business. College City Beverage has been a family-owned business and continues in this tradition with Jim’s two children, Christopher Sawyer and Natalie Sawyer Chell.
